The zombie film in Spain.

The genre of zombies in Spain (as occurred in our country with all the fantasy and horror films) had a late opening due mainly to the relentless censorship exercised the dictatorship of General Franco. Thus, the only director who, during the years after the civil war, dared to approach and flirt with the fantasy genre was Edgar Neville, with the movie "The tower of the seven humpback" (1944).Then there was a drought that lasted until the late sixties, when "The Mark of the Werewolf" (1968), directed by José López Eguiluz and starring Paul Naschy, opened the first golden age of film genrein Spain. However, it was not until director Amando de Osorio Galician directed "The Night of the Blind Dead" (1972), when it might be said that the film related to the Dead arrived in our country. With this production, this famous maker began an extensive film series (which eventually was established in tetralogy), dedicated to the legendary Knights Templar, who actively participated in the famous medieval Crusades, which aimed to liberate Jerusalem, (and by extension the so-called "Holy Places"), the yoke of the infidels, followers of Islam.Regarding his argument, the film is set in a village in Extremadura, called Berzano, near the border with Portugal. According to legend, in the thirteenth century lived in a monastery (now abandoned), a legion of bloodthirsty Templars who sought to achieve eternal life by drinking human blood. And to do so, resorted to many sacrifices. Authorities aware of the time of their crimes, the Templars were imprisoned and executed, being buried, precisely, at the foot of the monastery. The protagonists are three travelers who ignore local legend, they go into the abandoned village, finding death by such audacity. In my opinion, is a curious and entertaining film. It also has some reminiscences with the Legends of Becquer. The other films in this film franchise are: "Attack of the Blind Dead" (1973), "The cursed ship" (1974), and "The Night of the Seagulls" (1975). These three deliveries but I have not seen, so I could inform me, have arguments similar to the first film, with cadaverous zombies chasing unsuspecting victims.Another Spanish director who made relentless inroads into the zombie subgenre, was the prolific Jesus Franco, (known to friends and fans of the genre as Jess Franco), and zombie movies made the following: "Christine, Princess of eroticism" (1973), "The abyss of the Living Dead" (1981), and "Grave of the Living Dead" (1983), and "The House of the Dead" (1985). Of these, I can only speak knowingly of the third, which refers to a daring group of friends who, aware of the exact location of buried treasure in Africa by the Germans during the Second World War, unfortunately encounter a Nazi zombie brigade who jealously guard the loot. And also, I know, in the other three films appear seductive girls Templars and generous bust.Other contemporary productions of the above, which are also worthy of mention are "The Orgy of the Dead" (1973), Jose Luis Merino and, above all, "Do not desecrate the sleep of the dead" (1974) by Jorge Grau. The latter is an ambitious and remarkable Spanish production filmed in the UK. In it, a young antiques dealer meets a woman who is on track to the farm of his sister. In the field she is attacked by a homeless, suffering from a strange disease that actually is the result of a dangerous epidemic. And the plot becomes complicated with the police investigation notes, erroneously, that the responsibility for the events that are happening, is a group of satanic hippies and drug addicts, snatchers. However, the true origin of the epidemic, which is an alarming increase is the commissioning of a new experimental machine driven by the English Ministry of Agriculture, through ultrasound, kills insect pests harmful to crops plots. It remains curious that the machine that kills the insects is the same as has the terrifying ability to turn men into zombies. And after this film, the genre fell into oblivion for not just years but decades. Spanish production of terror, in general, continued to be successful in the seventies, but in the early eighties began to decline, a slow death as lace was the decision of the socialist culture minister to award grants to other genres (especially literary adaptations), leaving their fate to the forgotten genre, along with the uncovering phenomenon also exhausted, more public had taken the cinemas in Spain. This long journey in the desert lasted more than two decades. And finally, in 2007, the directors Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza amazed at the Festival of Fantastic Film and terror of Sitges with its feature set "REC", which was a huge blockbuster. In this film, the murders are the work of the undead, but of people infected by an unknown virus (as happened with "28 Days Later, Danny Boyle). Respect to its argument, a quiet night in which a journalist and his camera is doing a report on a fire station becomes a terrifying nightmare when receiving a warning call from a downtown building in Barcelona, (and so far I can comment, since it is a matter of gutting the movie for those who have not yet seen). The peculiarity of the highlight of the film is undoubtedly the use of so-called "subjective", ie the technique to show, through the camera, which sees the character.Such was the impact of the film, even at the international level (as happened with "Open Your Eyes" by Alejandro Amenabar and its remake "Vanilla Sky") that Hollywood was quick to make their own version (which was mimetic, but not even with higher quality than the original). Finally, two years after the onset of the first, came out the second part: "REC 2", (2009), more ambitious and bigger budget than the first delivery and also broke the box office. Thanks to the dividends and profits reaped respectable, Film producer (responsible for much of the same production, distribution and franchise), recently announced the shooting of two new installments of the franchise. Thus, "REC Genesis", will be released in fall 2011 and will be directed by Paco Plaza. This is a prequel that describes the origin, the devastating virus began squeezing the tenants of the building in the old city, making infected. For its part, "REC Revelation", will be released in the autumn but in this case, 2012 and will be directed by Jaume Balagueró. And this is a sequel (ie, the continuation of the second part of the story), which will tell us the outcome of the story. The only thing to expect, and that's what I hope all the fans and fantasy fans, is that these last two issues should be so entertaining and exciting as the first two parts.
